SpaceX has now lost the equivalent of a full Tesla in market capitalization

SpaceX has experienced a significant drop in its market capitalization, losing over $1.2 trillion from its peak valuation of $225.64 in June. This decline roughly equals the entire worth of Elon Musk’s other major company, Tesla, whose shares have also been under pressure, recently hitting near one-year lows. On Monday, SpaceX’s stock fell for the 13th session out of the past 16, dropping more than 1% to close at $113.50.

Despite the downward trend, trading activity around SpaceX shows a mix of strategies. While some option flows are becoming more balanced between optimistic and bearish bets, a notable portion of traders purchased speculative call options expecting a potential rebound. Calls outnumbered puts in volume, with 106,000 calls traded compared to 77,000 puts on Monday, though put premiums accounted for most of the $442 million traded. The most popular options contracts remain those with low probabilities of success but high potential payoffs if a turnaround occurs.

Looking ahead, SpaceX’s upcoming earnings report, scheduled for August 4, adds another layer of uncertainty. This will be the company's first earnings release since its initial public offering, triggering the unlocking of up to 911.5 million shares for sale by early August. Investors and analysts are wary about the impact of this lockup expiration, though some experts like Charles Moon from Prosper Trading Academy do not foresee it being as damaging as feared. Moon noted that despite the risks, the broader market climate, especially the focus on capital expenditures in AI and tech stocks, is influencing SpaceX’s volatility.

Early trading following the earnings announcement has seen SpaceX shares continue to decline, down about 3% as of Tuesday morning. The company remains a focal point for traders due to its dramatic price swings and the potential volatility around its financial disclosures. SpaceX’s position as a cutting-edge tech and aerospace leader juxtaposed with its current market challenges exemplifies the risks and opportunities in today’s high-growth sectors.
