Sen. McConnell still not cleared to go back to work as he recovers from fall, doctors say

Senator Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky Republican and former Senate majority leader, remains in recovery following a serious fall last month and has yet to be cleared by doctors to return to work. McConnell, 84, has been receiving daily rehabilitation therapy at a specialized facility since being discharged from the hospital. His medical team from the Office of the Attending Physician (OAP) is overseeing intensive physical therapy aimed at restoring his mobility and preventing further incidents.

The physician's office noted that McConnell’s past battle with polio during childhood significantly affects his current mobility challenges. Although the fall caused him to lose consciousness and led to a mild bout of pneumonia, medical assessments have ruled out broken bones, tumors, hemorrhages, concussions, heart attacks, or strokes. Despite these positive findings, McConnell continues a demanding rehabilitation regimen and remains unable to resume his Senate duties.

In a written statement shared with the public, McConnell apologized for missing a major Kentucky event at Fancy Farm, signaling his ongoing commitment to recovery before returning to his Senate responsibilities. He expressed gratitude for the public’s well wishes and his eagerness to get back to both Washington and his home state as soon as possible. The update was accompanied by a recent photo of McConnell with his wife Elaine Chao, emphasizing his continued engagement with family during this period.

McConnell’s recent health struggles have fueled considerable speculation and scrutiny, especially after initial communications offered limited details about his condition. Earlier this summer, emergency responders were reported to have performed CPR at his residence, raising concerns about his wellbeing. His office has since maintained that McConnell remains lucid and engaged, with friends and GOP colleagues confirming frequent phone conversations. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear formally requested a health update in early July, underscoring the public interest surrounding the senator’s status.
