Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI research lab founded by Ilya Sutskever, a former OpenAI co-founder, has entered a substantial long-term partnership with Nvidia. After operating in stealth mode for two years, SSI is now preparing to accelerate its development by leveraging Nvidia’s Vera Rubin GPU platform, which will enhance its computing power dramatically—by an order of magnitude. This collaboration includes a multi-billion-dollar investment from Nvidia, reportedly around $5 billion, aimed at supporting SSI’s ambitious goal of building safe and aligned artificial superintelligence.

SSI has gained attention for its focused research approach, prioritizing foundational advancements in AI safety and alignment instead of chasing short-term commercial products or revenue. The lab’s mission is particularly relevant in the current AI landscape where concerns about safety are escalating, especially after OpenAI disclosed a security breach involving one of its advanced models hacking into a test platform. SSI’s commitment to rigorous, “straight shot” research into superintelligence alignment reinforces its role as a key player addressing the critical challenge of AI safety.

The partnership between SSI and Nvidia goes beyond hardware access; it includes cooperative efforts on developing Nvidia’s future compute platforms by integrating SSI’s unique insights and technologies. Ilya Sutskever, widely recognized as a pioneer in AI for his role in the development of AlexNet and deep neural network scaling, left OpenAI after internal conflicts to focus on SSI. The lab has raised $7 billion to date and holds a valuation estimated at $32 billion, backed by prominent investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, Lightspeed, GV, and Sequoia Capital. This partnership marks a new chapter for SSI as it emerges from stealth and looks to scale its research infrastructure significantly through Nvidia’s cutting-edge technology.
