WhatsApp has expanded its calling features to its web app, allowing users to make and receive audio and video calls directly from their browsers. Previously, voice and video calls were only available on WhatsApp’s smartphone and native desktop apps. This update introduces a Calls tab on the web interface, which organizes call history and favorites, mirroring the experience found on other platforms.

In addition to enabling calls on the web, WhatsApp includes several new functionalities. Users can transfer ongoing calls seamlessly between devices without ending the call, such as moving a call from their desktop to their phone. The company has also added waiting rooms for group calls; hosts can control participant entry by enabling a “Require approval to join” setting, enhancing meeting security and control.

WhatsApp has improved the quality of video calls by ensuring high-definition streaming starts within the first few seconds. The update also includes background noise suppression technology to filter out ambient sounds during calls, improving audio clarity in noisy environments. These enhancements are geared toward users conducting professional or work-related meetings over WhatsApp.

Looking ahead, WhatsApp recently launched a reservation system for usernames, which will allow people to call others across platforms using those usernames. This feature is part of the broader evolution of WhatsApp’s communication tools under Meta, aimed at increasing user convenience and connectivity.
