Sorry, haters. Ferrari’s first EV is doing just fine

Ferrari's entry into the electric vehicle market with the Luce, its first EV, has defied widespread skepticism and negativity. When Ferrari unveiled the five-seater Luce in May, the reaction was largely critical, with many online commentators comparing its design unfavorably to more affordable models like the Nissan Leaf and predicting that Chinese EV manufacturers would outperform it in both price and performance. Even some insiders, including former Ferrari chair Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, doubted its prospects, contributing to an 8% drop in Ferrari’s stock price following the reveal.

Contrary to these forecasts, the Luce has quickly become a commercial success. Ferrari reached its 2026 sales target for the model in just two months, selling close to 500 units priced at around €555,000 ($630,000) each. Reports indicate that roughly 20% of these vehicles have found buyers in China, a market particularly receptive to fast, sleek four-door electric cars. The Luce, designed in collaboration with Jony Ive and LoveFrom, appears to be well-aligned with preferences in China, boosting its global demand.

Much of the early criticism focused on the Luce’s styling, which diverged from traditional Ferrari aesthetics in significant ways. Despite this, the car has captured the interest of Ferrari’s often brand-loyal and affluent customer base, many of whom own multiple Ferraris and are drawn to the combination of practicality and the marque’s prestige. Early reviews suggest the Luce delivers a driving experience consistent with Ferrari’s standards, further justifying the premium price point.

Ferrari’s ability to sell a high volume of its first electric model underscores the brand’s enduring appeal and the strong demand for EVs within the luxury automotive segment. While some initial doubters remain unconvinced, the Luce’s performance in the market challenges the assumption that Ferrari’s foray into electric vehicles would falter. With this launch, Ferrari seems well positioned to compete in the evolving EV landscape while retaining its exclusive brand identity.
