DoorDash is building its own drone delivery business

DoorDash has officially launched its own drone delivery venture called DoorDash Air, following approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with a Part 135 air carrier certification. This development allows DoorDash to operate commercial drone deliveries across the United States, marking a significant step beyond its current partnerships with companies like Alphabet’s Wing and Flytrex. Although the company hasn’t set a timeline for when drone deliveries will become common, initial efforts will likely include pilot programs where drones fly short distances within visual range of operators.

DoorDash Air originates from DoorDash Labs, the company's research and development division that also developed Dot, an autonomous sidewalk delivery robot currently deployed in several U.S. cities such as Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, and Fremont. These initiatives represent DoorDash's broader vision to innovate its delivery network by integrating autonomous technologies like drones and sidewalk bots with its existing human delivery model. The company sees this blend of hardware and software as crucial to enhancing efficiency and solving real customer delivery challenges.

A core focus of DoorDash's drone and bot strategy lies in its software platform, the Autonomous Delivery Platform, which orchestrates deliveries by deciding in real-time whether a drone, robot, or human driver is the most suitable option for each order. According to DoorDash co-founder and chief product officer Stanley Tang, this approach tackles the full stack of delivery challenges from hardware design to routing and dispatch algorithms. This integrated system aims to operate seamlessly within DoorDash’s existing delivery app and service network.

Tang emphasizes that DoorDash's goal is not just to pilot autonomous tech but to solve practical customer problems by optimizing delivery modes. Unlike many other companies that focus on a single layer of autonomy, DoorDash is developing end-to-end solutions that combine hardware innovation with sophisticated software management. This unique approach, Tang notes, creates some of the most complex and interesting challenges in the autonomy space, positioning DoorDash as a leader in integrating drone delivery technology into everyday commerce.
