OpenAI has expanded access to ChatGPT Health, making it available to all U.S. users aged 18 and over across free and paid plans as of July 2026. Initially launched in January as a dedicated hub for health-related questions, this feature now integrates personal health data from platforms like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal, as well as medical records from hospital systems such as Epic and Oracle Health. The rollout comes amid heightened scrutiny following a lawsuit by a Florida pastor who claimed ChatGPT Health gave dangerously inaccurate advice.

Since its limited debut, the number of health-related queries to ChatGPT has surged from 230 million to 300 million per week. OpenAI noted that a majority of these questions occurred outside the dedicated health hub, prompting the company to allow health data integration for all queries within ChatGPT. This enables users to receive tailored insights about allergies, nutrition, and more, drawing on their connected health information while emphasizing that the system is not intended for medical diagnosis or treatment.

OpenAI has made improvements to its AI models for health queries, highlighting that the newer GPT 5.6-Luna model outperforms earlier versions on HealthBench, a benchmark designed by OpenAI to assess large language models in healthcare contexts. The company continues to collaborate with physicians to enhance accuracy and reliability but stresses users should verify information with healthcare professionals. OpenAI’s terms explicitly disclaim use of its AI for diagnostic purposes, a stance they reiterated in response to legal challenges and ongoing safety concerns.

Despite ongoing worries about AI’s reliability in medicine, other tech players such as Anthropic and Google are also developing AI health tools. ChatGPT Health is launching for all logged-in U.S. users this week on web and iOS platforms, offering a broader AI-driven support system for health queries while underscoring the importance of professional medical advice as the final authority.
