Ole Miss Sues Two Former Football Players, Claiming Breach of Contract

Ole Miss has filed lawsuits against two former football players, Princewill Umanmielen and Devin Harper, alleging breach of contract related to revenue-sharing agreements. These contracts, signed in January 2026, included provisions requiring the players to pay significant termination fees—$550,000 for Umanmielen and $400,000 for Harper—if they voluntarily ended the agreements within 90 days. Both players transferred to LSU later that month, following former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin's move to Baton Rouge.

The suits were filed in Lafayette County, Mississippi Circuit Court and represent Ole Miss’s attempt to recover nearly $1 million in contractual termination fees that have not been paid by the two athletes. Ole Miss is seeking not only the termination fees but also additional damages and attorneys' fees through the litigation. The lawsuits mark a continuation of strained relations between Ole Miss and LSU, intensifying the rivalry following Kiffin's departure in November 2025.

These legal actions are part of a broader trend in college sports where institutions pursue former players who transfer after signing revenue-sharing contracts. Precedent for such lawsuits exists in recent cases involving schools like Duke and Cincinnati, with outcomes ranging from settlements to ongoing litigation. In some instances, the mere threat of legal proceedings has prompted players to reconsider transfer decisions.

While Ole Miss has yet to comment officially, LSU athletics declined to respond regarding the lawsuits. The cases highlight the growing complexities and financial stakes in college athlete transfers amid evolving Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and compensation frameworks. As this legal battle unfolds, it underscores how contract enforcement is becoming a critical element in the business dynamics of college football.
