EV prices aren’t following the ‘law of used cars,’ analyst says — what it means for buyers and sellers

Used electric vehicle (EV) prices have unusually risen in 2026, defying the typical depreciation trend seen in the auto market. Generally, used cars lose value after purchase, and EVs have historically experienced even steeper declines. However, data from Recurrent shows that the prices of used EVs climbed 5.1% from January to June and continued rising by 7% through mid-July, a trend confirmed by Edmunds, which noted a 6% increase in the average price of three-year-old EVs during the first half of the year. This appreciation is broad across many models and suggests sellers may secure higher returns than expected.

This price growth is occurring despite a record supply of used EVs entering the market, including over 500,000 leased EVs expected to be returned in 2026. The increase contrasts with past situations where high supply typically pushed prices downward. Experts attribute the strong demand to rising gasoline prices driven by geopolitical tensions such as the Iran war and broader affordability challenges. Even though the federal EV tax credit was cut early last year, consumer interest in used EVs remains robust, likely due to the fuel cost savings and competitive pricing compared to gas vehicles.

Demand for used EVs under $20,000 surged the most, with prices rising nearly 9.4% in the first half of the year, while higher-priced models above $40,000 experienced slight declines. This pattern indicates consumers are especially seeking affordable electric options. Industry insiders also highlight that total ownership costs for EVs can be lower than traditional cars, factoring in maintenance and fuel expenses. The increasing variety of EV brands and models available has also expanded buyer choice, helping sustain the demand.

For buyers, the rising prices make entering the used EV market more costly, potentially limiting affordability. However, for current owners, the trend offers a chance to sell vehicles for more than anticipated, a rare benefit in the used car landscape. Overall, affordability remains a key driver in auto purchasing decisions, whether for electric or gas-powered vehicles. The ongoing interplay of supply, demand, gas prices, and policy changes will likely continue shaping this evolving market dynamic.
