Siri AI could come with a paywall for power users

Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed during his final earnings call that the upcoming Siri AI upgrade might include a paywall for heavy users. While these plans remain tentative, Cook suggested that users could purchase additional compute capacity for Siri AI through Apple’s existing iCloud+ subscription tiers, which currently offer enhanced cloud storage. He expressed enthusiasm about the progress of Siri AI and hinted at potential tiered usage models similar to those employed by other AI service providers like OpenAI and Anthropic.

The updated Siri AI is currently accessible in the iOS 27 beta version and is expected to be released widely this fall. This rollout comes at a pivotal moment as longtime Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus takes over as Apple’s new CEO. The company has faced significant challenges in advancing its AI assistant technology, including relying on Google’s custom Gemini model to boost Siri’s capabilities amid development delays. Apple also had to settle a $250 million lawsuit related to overstated AI features on the iPhone 16.

Apple’s hardware efforts are further complicated by a persistent industry-wide shortage of RAM, driving up costs and forcing major tech companies like Meta, Samsung, Microsoft, and Sony to increase device prices. Apple recently raised prices on Macs and iPads but has yet to adjust iPhone pricing. This supply chain and cost pressure come as Apple aims to meet growing customer demand while integrating more advanced AI technologies into its devices.

The evolution of Siri AI and its potential monetization through iCloud+ mark a strategic response to both competitive pressures and the economic realities of AI compute expenses. Apple’s approach aligns with a broader market trend of offering free AI experiences with optional paid upgrades for higher usage, reflecting the balance companies seek between accessibility and sustainable AI service delivery. As the company ushers in new leadership and navigates these challenges, Siri’s future could redefine how users interact with AI on Apple devices.
