Infantino Calls Off Plan to Sell Stakes in World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has officially abandoned his controversial plan to sell stakes in a new $20 billion commercial enterprise tied to the World Cup, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise. The initiative aimed to bundle World Cup media rights, partnerships, ticketing, licensing, and operations into a single entity, with around 20% of the company’s equity to be offered to outside investors. Thrive Eternal, a holding company linked to Joshua Kushner, was set to lead this investment round. However, the project faced immediate and widespread opposition from major continental federations including UEFA, CONCACAF, and AFC, each raising governance and transparency concerns.

The backlash from these soccer bodies was swift and severe. UEFA even threatened to boycott all FIFA competitions if the proposal proceeded, while CONCACAF and the AFC rejected it outright or expressed serious reservations. Key FIFA officials also dissented: Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino’s top advisor and former U.S. Soccer president, resigned over the plan, labeling it a poor deal for the sport and its member associations. FIFA COO Kevin Lamour described the initiative as a “project of one person” that deceived senior staff. The plan’s opacity and failure to meaningfully consult football stakeholders fueled demands for accountability and a review of FIFA’s leadership.

Infantino acknowledged the divisions created by the controversial proposal and stated that unity and improved support for football, especially in developing countries, remain his goals. He intends to convene discussions with all interested parties to realign efforts on growing the sport sustainably. Despite the project's cancellation, UEFA issued a scathing statement accusing Infantino of poor governance and secrecy, urging identification and accountability of those responsible for the proposal. CONCACAF’s statement went further, calling for a comprehensive reckoning with Infantino’s leadership, highlighting a pattern of unilateral decisions and poor governance practices.

The uproar around the FIFA Forward Enterprise plan has exposed cracks in Infantino’s once solid control over FIFA and raised critical questions about his future as president. The initiative’s collapse followed media leaks, member associations’ outright refusal, and criticism from influential figures, including U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and former U.S. President Donald Trump’s indifferent stance on the matter. With FIFA holding more than $5 billion in reserves, critics argue the investment scheme was unnecessary and poorly conceived. Moving forward, the sport’s governing bodies are demanding greater transparency, stakeholder engagement, and responsible leadership to restore trust in FIFA’s management.
