Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball announced it will not hold a season in 2027, marking a pause five years after its inaugural campaign. The league, part of the Athletes Unlimited sports organization founded by Jon Patricof and Jonathan Soros, stated the decision aligns with a broader strategy to focus on long-term growth. The announcement highlighted the evolving landscape of women's basketball, referring to the recent surge in investment and expansion, including the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement that significantly increased player salaries.
Despite its efforts to establish a professional presence since launching its basketball league in 2022, Athletes Unlimited has faced challenges, including a weakening player roster due to competition from other emerging women’s basketball leagues. Notable WNBA stars like Allisha Gray and Kelsey Mitchell had previously played in the league, but none were under contract for the upcoming season. The organization informed a five-player executive committee in advance and confirmed its door remains open for a potential return in 2028 or later.
The pause creates new opportunities for players to join rival leagues, such as Unrivaled and Project B, both offering substantial salaries and growing fan engagement. Unrivaled, co-founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, guarantees six-figure salaries and has rapidly signed key talents, filling over 90% of its roster for the 2027 season. Project B is positioning itself as a global league with multimillion-dollar deals for top players but still aims to fill its projected 66-player roster.
Athletes Unlimited’s suspension of its basketball season contrasts with the overall momentum in women’s basketball, which is experiencing increased financial investment and expanded competitive options. This strategic hiatus might allow Athletes Unlimited to reassess its approach and position itself for a stronger comeback amid a rapidly evolving ecosystem of professional women’s basketball opportunities.
