Blue Jackets Merge TV and Radio Broadcasts

The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced a significant change to their broadcast strategy by merging their radio and television audio feeds. Starting immediately, the team's radio broadcasts will use the audio from their television broadcasts, ending the 17-year tenure of longtime radio play-by-play announcer Bob McElligott. McElligott expressed gratitude for his years with the team but has not disclosed his next steps. The new radio broadcasts will feature TV play-by-play commentator Steve Mears, color analyst Jody Shelley, and radio host Dylan Tyrer, who will simultaneously air on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus and television.

This shift aims to streamline production efforts but has faced backlash from fans on social media. Critics argue that hockey’s rapid pace demands detailed commentary on radio to aid listeners, who cannot see the game, whereas TV audiences rely on visuals, raising concerns about the quality of the simulcast experience for radio listeners. The Blue Jackets’ move comes as the team navigates uncertainties in their television broadcast arrangements. With regional sports networks (RSNs) faltering, the Blue Jackets were broadcast on FanDuel Sports Network Ohio in the 2025–26 season.

The NHL has announced that it will handle production and distribution of the Blue Jackets’ broadcasts for the upcoming season, but has yet to confirm which platforms will carry the games. This marks a turbulent period for the team’s broadcast distribution following the demise of their previous RSN partner, Main Street Sports Group. Neither the NHL nor the Blue Jackets provided further comment on the simulcast decision or television plans at this time.

Blue Jackets’ VP of business intelligence and broadcasting Marc Gregory thanked McElligott for his significant contributions to the franchise's media presence. The decision reflects ongoing changes in sports media rights and broadcast models as teams and leagues adjust to the evolving media landscape and fan consumption habits. The team hopes this new simulcast model will create a unified voice for both TV and radio audiences despite lingering fan concerns about the approach.
