Torres, who recently scored the winning goal for Spain in the World Cup final against Argentina, is currently on holiday and has yet to rejoin Barcelona’s preseason activities. Flick emphasized Torres’ importance, especially after noting the recent loss of Robert Lewandowski and the club’s unsuccessful efforts to acquire other forwards like Julian Alvarez and Junior Kroupi.

The 26-year-old forward is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain, where his former Spain manager Luis Enrique is currently coaching. Given that Torres’ contract with Barcelona is set to expire in June 2027, this summer represents the club’s final opportunity to obtain a significant transfer fee. Barcelona aims to recoup a major portion of the €55 million ($63.5 million) paid to Manchester City for Torres in late 2021, capitalizing on his increased value following his World Cup heroics.

Barcelona is cautious about letting Torres leave due to their limited offensive options. With Lewandowski’s departure to the Chicago Fire and younger talent like Hamza Abdelkarim not yet ready to consistently perform at the highest level, maintaining Torres would stabilize their attacking lineup. The club also has alternative players like Dani Olmo, who could potentially fill some of the attacking roles, yet Flick plans to assess all available options carefully before the La Liga season opener against Elche on August 23rd.

The situation remains fluid as Torres’ future is not finalized. His contribution last season, including 16 goals playing in a role similar to Lewandowski’s, was crucial to Barcelona’s successful retention of the La Liga title.
