Tobacco Road Golf Club in North Carolina is launching a new 12-hole par 3 course called The Matchbox on August 1st, notable for its use of synthetic turf across all teeing areas and greens. This innovation sets it apart in the golf world, as the course was constructed in just six months without irrigation needs or extensive tree removal. The synthetic surfaces provide consistent play quality even in shaded or drought-prone sections, contributing significantly to sustainability and water conservation efforts.

The Matchbox course, designed by Carlton/Marshall Golf Design and Mark White, offers a distinct playing experience with holes ranging from 40 to 105 yards. It’s carved through a pine tree forest close to Tobacco Road’s original 18-hole layout and features bold design elements such as a blind 80-yard tee shot and shots over natural features like coves and mounds. This design challenges short-game skills while keeping the play fun and engaging.

Tobacco Road owner Mark Stewart highlighted that this synthetic turf course could inspire other facilities, especially those with unused land or needing low-maintenance options. The turf’s performance, validated by USGA’s GS3 ball data, meets standards for firmness, smoothness, and speed comparable to natural grass. Stewart sees potential for synthetic turf not only on short courses but also on practice greens or areas undergoing routine maintenance.

This project marks a first for a nationally recognized golf destination to adopt full synthetic turf surfaces, moving beyond partial use on practice tees seen at some other U.S. locations. By embracing this technology in a prominent new course, Tobacco Road hopes to start a broader movement toward sustainable, low-water golf environments that maintain playing quality while reducing environmental impact.
