GM to launch proprietary in-vehicle AI system later this year

General Motors is set to introduce a proprietary in-vehicle AI system later this year, designed to offer a more integrated and tailored experience for its customers compared to its existing technology. The new assistant will go beyond the capabilities of the Gemini AI assistant developed in partnership with Google, by deeply incorporating GM vehicle knowledge, OnStar intelligence, and telematics to enhance usability and functionality. Anna Santos, GM's director of product management for voice and AI, emphasized that the system will better understand the vehicle, driving context, and owner needs to simplify everyday vehicle ownership.

The current Gemini AI, which is being deployed in eligible 2022 model year and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles, allows users to control certain car functions and engage in conversational activities. However, it mainly operates like an AI assistant on a phone, with limited vehicle-specific integration. GM’s forthcoming AI system aims to expand those capabilities by delivering more specialized features such as predictive maintenance and real-time vehicle telemetry, which will be guided by proprietary data exclusive to GM.

GM is collaborating with an unnamed large language model provider to develop this native AI assistant, reinforcing the automaker’s commitment to embedding deeper vehicle expertise and intelligent personalization within the AI. Examples of potential uses include creating tailored “kids settings” that adjust music, seat positions, climate controls, and door locks according to passengers’ profiles. This effort marks a significant step in GM's broader AI journey toward more intelligent, context-aware vehicle assistants.

This launch comes after GM announced its plans last year to roll out AI technology within its vehicles, targeting millions of models starting in 2026. The new GM AI assistant is expected to offer enhanced integration with both vehicle systems and OnStar’s services, creating an experience that transcends general AI assistants by focusing on automotive-specific needs. According to GM, this technology will pave the way for future innovations that bring more convenience and connectedness to vehicle owners.
