Apps that help you break free from doomscrolling and get active

Doomscrolling, the habit of endlessly scrolling through negative news or social media, has become a common and unhealthy pastime, often leading to poor posture, eye strain, and negative feelings. To combat this, several new apps have emerged that encourage users to reduce screen time and increase physical activity by linking digital access to real-world movement and habits. These apps provide a range of approaches to nudge users away from their screens and into more active lifestyles.

Digital Carrot is a versatile app that blocks distracting content until users achieve personalized fitness, productivity, or screen time goals, syncing with devices like the Apple Watch. It supports challenges based on location and time, such as requiring a completed workout at the gym before unlocking apps, and is available on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux. MeBeMe, on the other hand, motivates better habits through notifications that encourage users to complete small missions like bursts of exercise or social connection, with a particular focus on physical activity within its “Body” category for athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

StepBloc helps users break sedentary habits by locking access to apps until they meet specified step counts or complete exercises like push-ups or planks, offering a practical way to fit short workouts into daily routines. Similarly, Steppin, created by Kayak’s founder, rewards physical steps with incremental screen time. Another unique approach comes from TouchGrass, which requires users to go outside and take photos of actual grass to unlock apps, using advanced computer vision to verify the photo’s content. These apps often work on iOS devices and include freemium or subscription options for enhanced features.

Additional noteworthy options include WalkLock and Walkly, which monitor step counts through integration with Apple Health or Android systems to time-lock distracting apps until physical activity goals are met. WeWard provides a gamified experience by offering in-app currency for walking, which can be exchanged for rewards, along with an optional “Walking Mode” to restrict app access based on steps taken. Collectively, these apps represent various strategies to help users regain control over their screen time habits and promote healthier, more active lifestyles.
