Venture 313, a coalition of Detroit-based organizations including TechTown Detroit, Invest Detroit Ventures (ID Ventures), and the Detroit Development Fund, has received an additional $6.4 million grant from the Gilbert Family Foundation. Since its 2022 launch with a $10 million, three-year commitment, Venture 313 has been dedicated to supporting Detroit’s Black tech founders by providing a range of financial resources such as non-dilutive grants up to $15,000, equity investments up to $250,000, and loans of the same amount. The program targets early-stage startups through Series A while also assisting later-stage companies, extending support with executive coaching, fractional leadership, and conference sponsorships.
The initiative has made a significant impact on entrepreneurs across Detroit’s tech ecosystem, helping more than 125 businesses attract over $50 million in additional capital. Founders like Darren Riley of JustAir Solutions, Arabia Simeon of Politics on the Go (POGO), and Marc Howland of Breadless have benefited from Venture 313’s capital injections, strategic workshops, and networking opportunities with investors. Riley expanded his environmental health startup’s reach to 13 states, Simeon secured lucrative contracts and investor connections while preparing to scale, and Howland grew his wellness-focused restaurant into a multimillion-dollar franchise.
Venture 313 offers founders not just funding but also continuous skill-building and community engagement through biweekly AI build nights, hackathons, workshops, and legal and technical clinics. ID Ventures Principal Belvin Liles III emphasized the program’s role in connecting Detroit’s entrepreneurs to national ecosystems and spreading awareness that attracts talent and investments back to the city. This holistic approach supports founders throughout their growth stages and enhances Detroit’s reputation as an emerging Black tech hub.
With the $6.4 million renewal grant, Venture 313 is poised to deepen its support for Detroit’s Black tech founders by continuing its financial offerings and expanding professional development services. The coalition’s success illustrates the power of targeted local investment combined with access to mentorship, technical resources, and national platforms. As Detroit’s tech scene grows, Venture 313 aims to inspire more founders and investors to fuel the city’s innovative future.
