Dodgers Veteran Cuts Ties With Team Just Before Tarik Skubal Trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers made significant moves to bolster their pitching staff ahead of the MLB trade deadline, most notably acquiring ace Tarik Skubal, a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner. This major acquisition captured most of the attention, but there was a quieter roster change involving veteran left-hander Charlie Barnes. Barnes opted for free agency just hours before the Skubal trade became public, closing a short chapter with the Dodgers as they fine-tuned their postseason roster.

Charlie Barnes had been a role player providing emergency bullpen depth throughout the season. Despite brief stints with the Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs, Barnes struggled at the major league level this year, posting a 7.50 ERA over 12 innings. However, he demonstrated better performance in Triple-A, with a 4.39 ERA in over 55 innings, and also found some success overseas in South Korea’s KBO League, where he posted a solid 3.58 ERA between 2022 and 2025.

Barnes’ departure was influenced by the Dodgers’ roster dynamics, notably the return of closer Edwin Díaz from the injured list, which pushed Barnes off the big-league roster. Following a designation for assignment, Barnes cleared waivers but chose to enter free agency instead of accepting a minor league assignment, looking for a fresh start elsewhere. His exit coincided with one of the busiest stretches of the Dodgers’ season, as they juggled pitching needs with major acquisitions.

For Barnes, free agency represents an opportunity to reset after a tough season at the MLB level. While his major league numbers were underwhelming, his dependable Triple-A performance and previous overseas success may attract teams in need of a left-handed bullpen option with experience. Meanwhile, the Dodgers move forward with their reconfigured pitching staff anchored by their new star, Tarik Skubal, as they pursue a third straight World Series appearance.
