Valar Atomics, a nuclear startup focused on small modular reactors (SMRs), has secured an impressive $1 billion equity funding round led by Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire, who is also joining the company's board. Alongside this equity raise, the company announced a $200 million credit line from Erebor and other financial institutions. Valar’s valuation is reported to be around $6 billion, underscoring significant investor confidence in its approach to next-generation nuclear power.
The company specializes in SMRs, which are compact, factory-built nuclear reactors designed to be more cost-effective and quicker to deploy than traditional nuclear plants. In June, Valar Atomics successfully demonstrated its Ward 250 reactor by powering an Nvidia Blackwell AI system and entered into a development partnership with Nvidia to create a waterless 30MW AI data center. These efforts emphasize Valar’s focus on integrating advanced nuclear technology with high-demand computing applications.
Valar highlights its accelerated development cycle, noting it took two years to develop the NOVA core and just seven months for its Ward 250 reactor to reach criticality. The startup plans to use the new funding to scale manufacturing, aiming to produce reactors at increasingly higher volumes—moving toward tens, then hundreds, and eventually thousands annually. This manufacturing growth is critical to Valar’s strategy to rapidly enhance reactor design and deployment speed.
The funding round also included investors such as Apandion Capital, Atreides Management, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Point72, Riot Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners. Valar joins a growing list of nuclear tech companies attracting major investments, like Antares, which raised $470 million recently, and X-energy, which went public with a $1 billion IPO. These trends reflect strong market interest in advanced nuclear solutions for clean energy and industrial applications.
