Disney’s new parks boss outlines investment strategy, with superfans at the fore

Thomas Mazloum, newly appointed chairman of Disney Experiences, shared his vision for the company’s parks division at the D23 Expo, emphasizing a strategy focused on balancing large-scale expansions with meaningful updates for dedicated fans. Highlighting a planned $60 billion investment over the next decade, Mazloum announced the restoration of the iconic yeti animatronic at Expedition Everest, alongside the return of fan-favorite characters Dreamfinder and Figment at Epcot and a major Tomorrowland overhaul. These moves signal Disney’s commitment to engaging its most ardent supporters while driving growth in its diverse theme park portfolio.

Mazloum explained that his approach involves catering simultaneously to the needs of occasional visitors, often from out-of-state or international markets, and the frequent, loyal passholders who drive much of the company’s merchandise and concession sales. The overarching goal is to harmonize the broad appeal of expansive new lands, such as the upcoming Monsters, Inc. Monstropolis and Cars-themed areas, with smaller but significant experiences that resonate deeply with Disney superfans. This dual focus aims to optimize attendance and guest satisfaction across the board while adapting to shifting travel patterns and economic factors.

The strategy appears to be yielding impressive results, with Disney’s Experiences division reporting a record nearly $10 billion in revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2026, marking a 10% increase year-over-year. Domestic park attendance was up 3%, and guest spending rose 4%, outperforming some competitors like Comcast in key markets such as Florida. Initiatives like the Cool Kids Summer promotion and refreshed attractions, including Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, have contributed to this robust performance by attracting diverse visitor segments.

Looking ahead, Disney plans further landmark projects such as the overhaul of the Carousel of Progress and continued development of Avengers Campus and Villains Land. Mazloum also emphasized the importance of returning beloved nighttime spectaculars and parades, like “Remember Dreams Come True” and “World of Color,” which foster emotional connections among repeat visitors. By putting fans at the center of its decisions, Disney aims to sustain long-term growth through a blend of nostalgia, innovation, and expansive new experiences tailored to a broad array of guests.
