Credit card issuer Synchrony announces partnership with OpenAI

Synchrony Financial, the credit card issuer known for partnerships with major brands like Amazon, Walmart, and Lowe’s, has announced a new collaboration with artificial intelligence leader OpenAI. This partnership will integrate OpenAI's advanced AI models into Synchrony’s consumer portals, aiming to enhance the shopping experience for its customers. The initiative represents an early-stage effort to leverage AI in transforming how consumers navigate and transact in online commerce.

By deploying OpenAI's technology, Synchrony intends to create a more seamless and intuitive experience for users, from product discovery to payments and loyalty rewards. Kaylin Voss, OpenAI’s vice president of Americas and Industries, emphasized that AI offers an opportunity to rethink the entire commerce journey. OpenAI’s models will be embedded not only in customer interfaces but also across Synchrony’s internal operations to accelerate product innovation.

In addition to powering consumer portals, Synchrony is launching a ChatGPT plugin that allows customers to explore marketplace deals, promotional financing options, and offers from partner retailers more efficiently. This step aligns with the broader trend of integrating AI-based virtual assistants into digital commerce platforms, positioning Synchrony to stay competitive as AI agents increasingly influence purchasing behavior.

This partnership comes at a pivotal moment as OpenAI prepares for a major initial public offering, seeking to expand ChatGPT’s role in commerce beyond its current capabilities. Synchrony's collaboration with OpenAI reflects a strategic commitment to harness AI-driven tools to enhance customer engagement and drive growth in the evolving digital payments landscape.
