Why JPMorgan is investing big in the 2028 LA Olympics

JPMorgan Chase has committed to a major partnership with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, becoming the event’s first-ever global banking partner. While the exact financial terms were not disclosed, such sponsorships typically exceed $200 million for each four-year Olympic cycle. This deal positions JPMorgan at the top tier of Olympic sponsorship, known as The Olympic Partners, which grants the firm exclusive marketing rights and signals strong confidence in the revamped Olympic sponsorship model.

The sponsorship aligns with a broader effort by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Properties to consolidate marketing rights and create new commercial opportunities. Following departures of major sponsors like Panasonic, Toyota, and Bridgestone at the end of 2024, organizers have introduced joint ventures to allow companies to engage across the LA 2028 Games, Team USA, and Paralympics simultaneously. This includes innovative marketing initiatives such as a 100-day, 50-state torch relay and venue naming rights, designed to balance revenue generation without over-commercializing the Olympic brand.

JPMorgan plans to leverage its Olympic involvement to expand its business operations in Southern California, announcing a 30% increase in local business bankers, adding over 100 new hires. With an existing clientele of 5 million consumers and nearly 590,000 small-business customers in the region, the bank aims to support businesses that can benefit from the economic activity generated by the Games. According to chief marketing officer Carla Hassan, the partnership is a firm-wide strategy intended to boost brand strength, customer engagement, acquisition, and employee pride.

This move builds on JPMorgan’s extensive investments in sports, including sponsorships of Madison Square Garden, the Chase Center, the US Open, and Ohio State University athletics. Additionally, the firm recently launched an Athlete Council featuring high-profile sports figures to promote financial literacy within the sports community. Hassan highlighted the Olympics’ unique global reach as a key factor in the decision, emphasizing that very few partnerships offer this breadth of international exposure.
