Amazon announced a significant expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery service, targeting nearly 500 U.S. cities by the end of 2026. This marks a sixfold increase from its current reach, with notable new launch locations including Tolleson, Arizona; Ruskin, Florida; Kansas City, Kansas; and several cities across Louisiana, Michigan, and Texas. The return to Tolleson is particularly important following a drone accident there in 2025 that involved a collision with a crane. Despite past incidents, Amazon emphasized its focus on safety, highlighting its advanced Detect-and-Avoid system and compliance with Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 certification.

Prime Air drones are equipped with onboard cameras and sensors to navigate, detect obstacles, and ensure secure deliveries even in challenging conditions like light rain and varying temperatures. The service offers deliveries in as fast as 30 minutes for eligible orders over $50 at no additional cost for Prime members, with lower fees for smaller orders and higher fees for non-members. The service currently operates in seven states and plans to expand into Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Idaho, and New York, competing directly with Walmart and Alphabet’s Wing drone delivery networks that are also rapidly growing in the U.S.

Amazon’s Prime Air has already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages this year and is positioned to provide an ultra-fast delivery option for customers seeking expedited shipments. The drones primarily handle packages weighing five pounds or less, targeting small and urgent deliveries.
