The Late Michael Jackson Among Top Artists Fueling Sony Music's 22% Sales Jump

Sony Music Entertainment experienced a significant boost in sales during the first quarter of 2026, reporting $557.9 billion, which marks a 22% increase from the previous quarter. A major driver behind this surge is the renewed interest in the late Michael Jackson’s music, spurred by the release of the biopic "Michael" in April 2026. The film, starring Jackson’s nephew Jaafar as the iconic singer, performed exceptionally well, earning $97 million domestically and $217 million worldwide during its opening weekend, eventually breaking the $1 billion mark by July and becoming the highest-grossing biopic ever.

Michael Jackson’s estate, managed by attorney and co-executor John Branca, noted the extraordinary global response to the film, highlighting that it offers an authentic portrayal of Jackson’s life rather than a typical music biopic. The movie’s soundtrack, featuring classics such as “Thriller” and “Bad,” contributed heavily to Sony Music's top-performing tracks in the first quarter. This renewed attention to Jackson’s catalog has helped bolster the company’s music sales, alongside contributions from artists like Ella Langley, Bad Bunny, Raye, SZA, Luke Combs, and Peso Pluma.

Despite the strong performance in music, Sony’s theatrical and television division faced challenges, showing a 13% decline in revenue year-over-year to $1.98 billion for the quarter ending in June. However, operating income rose by 21% to $156 million, partly due to reduced marketing costs linked to fewer theatrical releases. Looking ahead, Sony Pictures expects a rebound in the second quarter with the release of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” on July 31, which set records with a $360 million domestic debut, signaling continued potential for growth in the entertainment sector.

Sony Music’s notably strong quarter underscores the lasting influence of iconic artists like Michael Jackson and the company’s ability to leverage film and music synergies. Alongside new and established artists, Sony continues to generate substantial revenue even as other segments face pressure, positioning the company well for further expansion fueled by both legacy and fresh content. This performance is a testament to the power of storytelling in music and film to captivate audiences and drive business success.
