India Is Stealing Cricket’s Throne From England and Australia

India is rapidly emerging as cricket’s new epicenter, overtaking England and Australia, the sport’s traditional powerhouses. This shift is highlighted by the Big Bash League (BBL) beginning its 2026–2027 season in Chennai, marking the first time a foreign franchise league will play on Indian soil. The Indian Premier League (IPL), launched in 2008, has grown into the most commercially dominant cricket tournament worldwide, with its valuation reaching $20.6 billion as of July 2026, second only to the NFL in brand value per match. Heavy private investments, such as those from the Aditya Birla Group backed by Blackstone, have fueled this explosive growth, turning India into the most lucrative market for cricket.

The IPL’s financial muscle and star power have drawn top international talent, sometimes at the expense of their national sides. For instance, England’s key player Jofra Archer missed important matches with his country due to IPL commitments, acknowledging a transformed cricket landscape. This commercial dominance has attracted attention globally, as evidenced by Cricket Australia’s CEO Todd Greenberg expressing interest in staging prestigious matches like the Ashes series in India. Additionally, there is growing consideration of Indian investments in foreign leagues, with Indian companies already buying stakes in England’s The Hundred tournament, injecting over $670 million and prompting rebranding efforts involving IPL team ownerships.

This growing Indian influence in international cricket is also reshaping franchise ownership trends. Indian investors such as Sun TV Network and RPSG Sports Ventures have acquired stakes in English cricket franchises, signaling a new era of cross-border ownership participation. Financial experts like Harsh Talikoti of Houlihan Lokey note that the experience of IPL owners in managing teams and fan engagement could bring fresh ideas and improvements to other leagues. Such moves are described as unprecedented in sports, paralleling a hypothetical scenario where the NFL would sell team stakes to foreign conglomerates and host its marquee event abroad.

The immense popularity of cricket among India’s massive population and its global diaspora is driving this transformation. Massive attendance records, such as the 373,691 fans at a Boxing Day Test match in Australia featuring India in 2024, demonstrate the commercial and fan base power India wields. Meanwhile, England’s cricket board predicts significant financial losses without visiting Indian teams, underscoring the shifting balance in cricket’s global commercial and sporting landscape. England and Australia are now feeling the impact of India’s rise as they strive to keep pace with the booming Indian cricket market.
