Iger, Kushner, Walter Have Sports Empires Beyond the Lakers

Bob Iger, Joshua Kushner, and Mark Walter have all built extensive sports investment portfolios well beyond their involvement with the Los Angeles Lakers. The recent $12.5 billion deal through which Iger and Kushner acquired a stake in the Lakers adds to their already broad holdings in multiple sports leagues. Mark Walter initially purchased the Lakers in 2025 for $10 billion but is now selling his majority stake. The agreement requires Kushner to divest his minority ownership in the Miami Heat due to NBA regulations prohibiting owners from controlling multiple franchises.

Bob Iger, the former Disney CEO who stepped down in March 2026, has significant sports interests including a controlling stake in NWSL’s Angel City FC, valued at $250 million when he and his wife acquired it in 2024. Iger also maintains connections with Kushner’s Thrive Capital and has been linked to potential NBA expansion projects in Las Vegas. His involvement marks a diversification beyond basketball into women’s soccer and potential future NBA ventures.

Joshua Kushner, founder of Thrive Capital and younger brother to Jared Kushner, has owned stakes in several NBA teams, including the Memphis Grizzlies and Miami Heat. His recent purchase of the Lakers will be his third NBA ownership involvement, but NBA rules will require him to sell the Heat stake. Kushner’s firm has also ventured into Major League Baseball with Thrive Eternal’s acquisition of a stake in the San Francisco Giants, demonstrating his growing footprint across major sports.

Mark Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners and co-founder of TWG Global, remains a formidable sports owner beyond the Lakers. He co-owns the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Sparks, founded the Professional Women’s Hockey League in 2023, and holds stakes in motorsports teams like Andretti Global and the Cadillac Formula One team. Additionally, Walter holds a 12.7% share in BlueCo, the company behind Premier League club Chelsea and Ligue 1’s RC Strasbourg Alsace, underscoring the global reach of his sports empire despite recent federal investigations into his business dealings.
