Mark Walter in Talks to Sell Chelsea Stake Amid Federal Probe

Mark Walter and Todd Boehly, co-owners of nearly 13% stakes each in Premier League club Chelsea since 2022, are reportedly in talks to sell their shares back to the club's majority owner, Clearlake Capital. Sources close to the matter told Front Office Sports the discussions have been underway even before Walter's companies became publicly known to be under federal investigation. This comes amid a turbulent period for Walter, highlighted by his recent unexpected sale of his controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion, just one year after acquiring the team for $10 billion.

The federal probes focus on Walter’s insurance businesses, specifically Delaware Life and Clear Spring Life & Annuity, which received grand jury subpoenas tied to the treatment and disclosure of affiliated investments. The investigation is being conducted by the Southern District of New York and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. These inquiries revealed that Delaware Life initially reported affiliated investments at roughly $1.4 billion, or 3% of its portfolio in June 2025, but after an internal audit following subpoenas, this figure was revised drastically to over $17 billion, about 40% of assets.

Legal experts note the gravity of the upgrade in reported affiliated investments, which surpassed Delaware’s disclosure thresholds and raise red flags regarding the accuracy and honesty of previous filings. Under Delaware insurance law, willful and intentional false filings carry potential criminal penalties, including imprisonment. While proving intentional deception is challenging, the scale of discrepancy has led regulators and analysts to describe the situation as serious, with Delaware’s Department of Insurance overseeing the matter but offering limited public comment so far.

Walter’s decision to potentially exit Chelsea aligns with his financial and legal difficulties surrounding his insurance empire. The sports and business worlds are watching closely as these developments unfold, signaling significant shifts in ownership and governance at high-profile sports franchises tied to Walter. Representatives from Chelsea, Clearlake Capital, and Walter’s company have not commented publicly amid ongoing investigations and negotiations.
