Disney+ Turns To TikTok For More Daily Engagement With Fan-Made Shorts

Disney+ is experimenting with a unique method to drive daily engagement by integrating fan-made short videos from TikTok into its vertical video feed called Verts. Launched as a U.S. pilot, this initiative aims to keep subscribers coming back more frequently, even when no major new movies or series are released. The fan videos, featuring beloved Disney characters from franchises like Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and FX, are selected from TikTok creators who opt into the program, gaining access to Disney’s extensive library of assets to enhance their content. These videos will appear both on TikTok and within Disney+, offering creators exposure across two platforms.

The collaboration includes a joint Disney Creator Ambassador Program that provides participants with tiered perks such as greater visibility, invitations to exclusive events, and opportunities for career development. However, the specifics of financial compensation, legal rights, and content moderation remain undisclosed by Disney and TikTok. The companies have not clarified whether creators receive payment or what control they maintain over their videos once they appear on Disney+. This lack of transparency leaves important questions about the economic and creative terms for participants still unanswered.

Disney’s primary goal with this arrangement is to foster habitual app usage by providing a constant flow of fresh, short-form content that complements its traditionally release-driven streaming service. CEO Josh D’Amaro emphasized that bringing TikTok videos into Disney+ will enrich the user experience and make the app stickier by bridging fan activity with official Disney entertainment. This strategy marks an effort to transform Disney+ into a more interactive digital hub for fans, one that could eventually integrate video, gaming, merchandise, and other interactive experiences beyond passive viewing alone.

The alliance also highlights a strategic tension for Disney between maintaining direct control over its streaming ecosystem and leveraging TikTok’s enormous creative culture, which the company does not own. TikTok’s platform generates millions of fan videos daily, a volume Disney+ cannot replicate internally. By tapping into this outside content stream, Disney hopes to convert TikTok’s discovery-driven audience into habitual Disney+ viewers. The pilot’s success will hinge on whether the fan videos can boost subscriber retention and engagement, and how the unresolved terms for creators unfold over time.
