Why Disney Can Find Success From ‘Bluey’ In A Post-’Paw Patrol’ Box Office

Disney is gearing up to release The Bluey Movie on August 6, 2027, following the phenomenal success of the Australian animated series Bluey, which debuted in 2018. The franchise has grown into a multibillion-dollar global sensation, becoming the number one most-streamed show in the U.S. for two consecutive years. In 2025 alone, Bluey amassed 45.2 billion minutes of streams, highlighting its widespread appeal among young audiences and families alike.

The recent box office launch of Paramount’s Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, which opened with $20.5 million domestically, provides a valuable roadmap for Disney. The Paw Patrol franchise has proven highly lucrative, with its first two films grossing $144.3 million and $205 million respectively, by expanding character stories and themes from the show into cinematic narratives. These movies succeed by offering children and families a larger-than-TV experience that also resonates emotionally.

Bluey’s transition to the big screen will similarly emphasize a movie experience that feels elevated beyond a typical episode. Notably, the Bluey Movie will be computer-animated, diverging from the show’s traditional 2D animation to establish a fresh visual identity. Reflecting Paw Patrol’s approach, the film is expected to deepen character development while exploring relatable themes suitable for both kids and parents, enriching the family viewing experience.

A major driver behind Bluey’s success is its unique appeal to whole families, especially through the relatable characters of Bluey’s parents, Chili and Bandit. Unlike children’s shows parents tolerate, Bluey actively engages adults, making it a shared entertainment event. This sense of family connection and emotional resonance will be central as Disney aims to translate Bluey’s living room charm into a compelling theater attraction in the years to come.
