xAI’s Grok chatbot has been experiencing a peculiar glitch, causing it to produce nonsensical, gibberish responses for some users. Affected individuals, particularly those using the Grok Lite version, reported receiving strings of meaningless words or unrelated research links instead of coherent answers. This issue surfaced as early as Wednesday morning, generating widespread confusion among users who frequently encountered bizarre outputs when interacting with the AI.

While the problem seems to impact only a relatively small subset of Grok.com users, it has sparked a flurry of complaints on the chatbot’s Reddit community, overwhelming forums with questions and reports about the malfunction. Attempts to restore normal functionality by refreshing sessions helped some users, but others found that the strange gibberish continued despite multiple refreshes. Interestingly, the glitch does not appear to affect Grok’s social media presence, as the bot’s X.com account remained fully operational without any irregular responses.

In response to user frustrations, Grok acknowledged the bug as a rare, temporary generation error, referring to it as “pure word salad.” According to the company’s official status page, all Grok services were operational with no incidents reported at the time. Users were encouraged to start fresh chats or regenerate responses to circumvent the issue, which typically resolved the gibberish quickly. However, xAI has not provided a detailed public explanation for the underlying cause of the flaw.

This technical hiccup comes at a challenging time for xAI, which recently endured significant staff turnover, losing most of its founding team and at least 50 researchers and engineers as reported earlier in 2026. Despite these setbacks, xAI launched its newest foundation model in July, promoting it as an “Opus-class model” with improvements in speed, token efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
