Drawing from his experience in community mental health and a deep understanding of the historical impact of mental health on Black communities, Akili envisioned BEAM as a dynamic, loving, and skills-based institution that challenges traditional mental health narratives. His goal has been to create programs that truly reflect community needs while fostering trust and connection among those they serve.

Central to BEAM's growth has been Akili’s emphasis on relationships rather than conventional venture capital funding. He has built the organization through genuine connections with community members and aligned public figures like Sir John, Laura Harrier, and Jerrie Johnson, who contribute their visibility and commitment to holistic wellness. Akili views these partnerships as collaborations with friends and colleagues dedicated to mental health advocacy, rather than mere celebrity endorsements.

Actress Jerrie Johnson shared her meaningful experience with BEAM, highlighting how the organization's authentic, intentional gatherings fostered real conversations around care and mental health, especially in an industry where emotional expression is often discouraged. She embraces her alignment with BEAM as a reflection of her values, acknowledging the risks of public mental health advocacy in Hollywood but emphasizing the importance of being true to oneself and pushing for systemic change.

Looking ahead, BEAM plans to deepen its collective healing work by expanding access and tools for diverse communities, including immigrants. One major upcoming project is a psychiatric guide titled "What I Wish My People Had Known," inspired by the original Green Book that helped Black travelers find safe spaces during segregation. This guide will provide practical information to help families and community members navigate the psychiatric system, starting with outreach in Georgia and California, where BEAM is actively engaged.
