Noel E. Hord, a pioneering figure in the footwear industry, passed away on May 27, 2026, at the age of 79 after battling Parkinson’s disease. Starting his career as a stock runner at Barker’s shoe store in Terre Haute, Indiana—where he was reportedly the first Black salesperson—Hord’s journey in retail was marked by significant milestones. Despite leaving college early, he advanced through roles at Wohl Shoe Co., J.L. Hudson, and eventually led major brands like Enzo Angiolini and Nine West Group as president and chief operating officer.

Hord’s leadership was particularly notable during a $600 million merger involving the Nine West Group, where he emphasized building strong teams and organizational culture over just focusing on marketing or products. His time at U.S. Shoe underlined his commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as he strived to make these principles central to business success.
