Trump bought SpaceX shares two weeks after blockbuster IPO

President Donald Trump purchased up to $50,000 worth of SpaceX shares on June 23, shortly after the company's highly anticipated initial public offering earlier that month. This investment came about two weeks following SpaceX's record-setting IPO, which saw the stock initially trade above $200 before settling in the mid-$150 range around the time of Trump's acquisition. By the end of the trading session on Monday, SpaceX shares closed at $135, the same price as its IPO, potentially placing the president's stake at a loss.

The relationship between Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk remains cordial despite a recent public dispute last summer. Musk had accused Trump of withholding Department of Justice files connected to Jeffrey Epstein, which included mentions of the former president. Nevertheless, SpaceX continues to benefit considerably from government contracts and the deregulation policies championed by the Trump administration, helping the company secure a strong foothold in Washington.

According to White House spokesman Davis Ingle, Trump's stock holdings are managed by third-party financial institutions that mirror recognized indexes, like the Schwab 1000. Ahead of its IPO, SpaceX successfully lobbied for rule changes in popular stock indexes to allow for quicker inclusion. This strategic move means that many investors may already hold SpaceX shares indirectly through index funds without realizing it.

SpaceX's IPO and subsequent market performance have attracted significant attention in the investment world, while also illustrating the overlap between politics and the rapidly growing private space industry. Trump's recent purchase highlights the ongoing financial and strategic connections between high-profile political figures and leading technology innovators like Musk.
