First Independence Bank, the first Black-owned bank in Minnesota, has officially opened a new branch in St. Paul, expanding its presence beyond its roots in Detroit. Established in 1970, the state-chartered commercial bank aims to foster capital accumulation particularly for underserved and minority communities through a range of financial products tailored for individuals, businesses, and commercial enterprises. It ranks as the seventh-largest Black-owned bank in the U.S. and has recently extended its reach into Chicago following an earlier expansion into Minneapolis, marking a historic milestone for Minnesota’s banking landscape.

The bank's Minneapolis entry was inspired partly by the social reckoning following George Floyd’s murder, highlighting longstanding issues with access and resources in the banking system for minority communities. Damon Jenkins, the Twin Cities senior vice president and Minnesota regional market president of First Independence Bank, spoke publicly about the community's desire for equitable financial opportunities and how local leaders collaborated with Kenneth Kelly, the bank’s chairman and CEO, to bring a minority depository institution to Minnesota. Jenkins also noted parallels between the bank's origins after the 1967 Detroit riots and the evolving need for wealth-building institutions in the Twin Cities.

The new St. Paul branch is situated within the Neighborhood Development Center at 627 University Ave. W., placing it in a hub of Black-owned businesses primarily serving the Frogtown, Rondo, and surrounding Ramsey County communities. The space includes residential units above and commercial and retail outlets on the ground floor, allowing the bank to act as a community anchor. Jenkins emphasized the bank’s role as more than just a financial institution; it functions as a partner to local entrepreneurs and a driver of wealth creation, with plans to host community-building events such as gaming tournaments and coding workshops for youth.

First Independence Bank’s expansion underlines its commitment to redefining economic opportunities and access for minority populations in new markets. The bank is positioning itself as a trusted, community-centered institution—one that encourages residents to see the branch as their own space to be valued and empowered. This historic move not only supports local Black-owned businesses but also reinforces the bank’s mission to build generational wealth and economic equity in Minnesota and beyond.
