United Airlines is set to expand its international network significantly in 2027, introducing flights to a variety of new destinations from Slovenia’s Ljubljana to Okinawa, Japan. This expansion reflects the airline’s continued confidence in strong consumer demand for premium overseas travel, even as it faces rising operational costs. United already holds the lead among U.S. carriers in international service and is strategically adding routes beyond the traditional major tourist spots to capture evolving traveler preferences.
Among the notable new routes, United plans to start flying from San Francisco to Okinawa and from Newark Liberty International Airport to several European cities, including Ljubljana, Olbia in Sardinia, Catania in Sicily, Ibiza and Valencia in Spain, Marseille, France, and Terceira in the Azores. Additionally, the airline will add business-oriented flights such as Newark to Luxembourg and Washington Dulles to Toulouse, France—the latter targeting aerospace industry travelers. These routes are set to launch between March and June 2027 using a mix of Boeing and Airbus aircraft.
United’s senior leadership highlighted a trend toward more “open-jaw” itineraries, where passengers fly into one city and depart from another within the same region, supporting the addition of multiple destinations in countries like Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The airline emphasizes that none of its existing routes will be cut to accommodate these new flights, signaling network growth rather than restructuring. CEO Scott Kirby noted that the extended travel season now runs well past summer into October, which has become one of the company’s most lucrative months.
The expansion comes as United maintains its position as the second-most profitable U.S. airline, just behind Delta Air Lines, which is also increasing international flights, particularly across the Pacific. United is also enhancing service from Los Angeles to Osaka, restarting San Francisco–Tel Aviv flights, adding Denver–Paris service, and planning a San Francisco to Sapporo route for a popular ski destination. This global network growth underscores United’s goal to cater to a broad spectrum of travelers, from vacationers to business professionals.
