Terry Rozier’s attempt to resume his NBA career while facing federal gambling charges has hit a significant obstacle in court. Rozier, who appeared before Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall on July 8, 2026, requested modifications to the conditions of his release to allow him to pursue an NBA contract during the pre-trial period. His legal team, led by attorney David Markus, sought to ease restrictions, including removing the no-contact orders involving players and coaches from the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat, but their motion was denied. Rozier’s trial is scheduled for February 8, 2027.

Rozier was arrested in October 2025 amid allegations that he manipulated his game performances with the Hornets to facilitate illegal sports betting profits. The charges increased recently with a superseding indictment, adding accusations of accepting a bribe to influence his on-court play. Previously, the Miami Heat waived Rozier in April 2026, and an arbitrator reversed a ruling that would have paid out his contract, citing the restrictions imposed on him as preventing contract fulfillment. This dispute cost Rozier roughly $26 million from the final year of a $96.3 million deal signed in 2021.

The judge cited several concerns in denying Rozier’s request, including the risks associated with international travel, which would be necessary if he played against teams like the Toronto Raptors. Government attorneys emphasized the unlikelihood of granting such travel privileges pre-trial, fearing flight risk. Additionally, Judge Hall highlighted problems tied to witness protection and previous violations of the no-contact order by Rozier. Even NBA executives expressed skepticism about teams showing interest due to these legal entanglements and the practical limitations on his availability.

Despite these setbacks, Rozier’s lawyers suggested he could play in domestic summer leagues such as The Basketball Tournament or Ice Cube’s Big 3, which comply with current bond restrictions. Government officials also appear willing to ease some no-contact restrictions to facilitate Rozier’s preparation for trial. Markus remains optimistic about Rozier’s innocence and hopes to prove his client’s non-involvement in the alleged betting scheme once the trial commences. However, the court’s cautious stance significantly dims Rozier’s chances of an immediate NBA return.
