SpaceX has revealed plans to construct a second major spaceport in Louisiana, investing $100 billion to develop a new Starbase facility for launching its Starship rockets. The selected site, located in Vermilion Parish along the Gulf Coast, is roughly ten hours east of its current Starbase complex in South Texas. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first potential Starship launch targeted for 2029, though Louisiana Economic Development suggests initial operations could start by 2030.

Despite this massive expansion, SpaceX continues to face technical challenges with Starship, which remains unproven in full low-Earth orbit reusable flight. The company has conducted 13 test flights since 2023, working to perfect the rocket’s return and refurbishment processes required for its ambitious goal of multiple launches per week. Elon Musk recently indicated that Falcon rocket production will cease once Starship achieves this operational cadence, underscoring SpaceX’s strategic bet on Starship.

The new Louisiana spaceport is expected to create 3,000 direct jobs over the first decade, with average annual salaries around $92,600, and will require over 30,000 construction workers during peak building phases. SpaceX envisions a self-sustaining facility featuring propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping, vehicle processing, and even an airport. It remains unclear whether SpaceX will replicate the Texas Starbase community model, which includes its own local government and services staffed by company personnel.

SpaceX is proactively addressing environmental concerns related to the Louisiana site, collaborating with state and federal agencies on coastal protection and habitat preservation. This initiative follows criticism and legal challenges over environmental and safety issues at the Texas Starbase, which has a high injury rate among workers. Following the tragic death of a contractor in May, the company’s engagement with local regulators aims to mitigate ecological impacts and foster community support.
