Apple has introduced two new processors, the M5 Ultra and M6 chips, powering the latest Mac Mini and Mac Studio models released in August 2026. The M5 Ultra is Apple’s most powerful chip yet, featuring a unique design that links two dual-die M5 Max chips into a quad-die configuration. This chip boasts an up-to-36 core CPU, up-to-80 core GPU, and delivers 1.2 TB/s of unified memory bandwidth, surpassing the M3 Ultra from just over a year ago by 50%. It is specifically engineered to handle demanding AI tasks, complex 3D rendering, and visual effects, targeting professional users.

The M6 chip targets general users, enhancing everyday computing needs while maintaining high energy efficiency. Built on an advanced 2 nm process, the chip includes a 12-core CPU complex with two additional cores compared to the M5, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and increased unified memory bandwidth. Apple claims the M6 offers nearly a 30% boost in peak GPU compute for AI, improving the speed of processing prompts for on-device large language models (LLMs). This advancement enables developers to run and fine-tune AI models locally on their Macs.

Apple is focusing on optimizing AI performance across its hardware with developer tools and frameworks designed to take advantage of the combined power from the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. These tools empower developers to build and operate AI workloads on-device securely, utilizing Apple’s Foundation Models or custom AI models. Although Apple has lagged behind competitors in building its own AI model—still relying on Google’s Gemini for Siri upgrades—it has leveraged on-device processing to enhance privacy and security when deploying features like Face ID and Touch ID.

The new Mac Mini devices featuring the M6 chip are now available for preorder starting at $899, with shipments scheduled after September 22. Apple’s announcement positions the M5 Ultra as a powerhouse for professional creatives and AI researchers, while the M6 aims to bring substantial AI and performance boosts to everyday users, emphasizing Apple's strategy of secure, efficient, on-device AI computation.
