Padres Will ‘Live Within Our Means,’ New Owners Say

José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones recently took over ownership of the San Diego Padres, finalizing a landmark $3.9 billion deal that set a new MLB record for franchise valuation. Under the late Peter Seidler, the Padres had built a reputation as one of baseball’s most aggressive spenders despite being based in a smaller market. The team regularly ranked among the league’s top payrolls, reaching a peak second only to the Dodgers in 2021, and made four playoff appearances from 2020 to 2025. Despite these competitive highs, the franchise operated at substantial financial losses and has yet to secure a World Series title since its inception in 1969.

The new ownership duo has pledged to maintain the Padres' pursuit of winning, but with a more cautious financial strategy. Feliciano emphasized the commitment to "live within our means," signaling a more balanced approach to spending that considers the franchise's long-term health. This could result in fluctuating payrolls depending on the season, combining periods of aggression with restraint. Their pledge comes as the team remains locked into massive contracts for marquee players Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Fernando Tatis Jr., which collectively will cost over $100 million annually by 2029 and extend well into the next decade.

During the previous ownership, the Padres' bold spending influenced the wider MLB payroll landscape, securing some of the largest contracts in league history. However, this approach also resulted in hefty operating losses and challenges, including the loss of local media rights in 2023. San Diego now depends on MLB’s in-house media programs for game broadcasts. While the aggressive spending model won praise from the MLB Players Association for its competitive ambition, it faces potential reevaluation as the league and union remain embroiled in contentious labor negotiations that include proposals for a hard salary cap.

Despite financial recalibrations, the Padres continue to enjoy robust fan engagement and market support, setting an attendance record of 3.4 million at Petco Park last season and ranking second in MLB attendance behind the Dodgers. Feliciano and Jones expressed gratitude for the city’s support and plan to reinvest in the team, stadium, and community. As co-founder of investment firm Clearlake Capital, Feliciano also has sports ownership ties to Chelsea F.C., where he collaborates with Dodgers owners, adding a cross-sport dimension to his portfolio. The Padres’ future under the new ownership aims to balance financial prudence with their ongoing drive for on-field success.
