Hyundai has grown more than any automaker in the U.S. — and it’s not done yet

Hyundai Motor Group has emerged as the fastest-growing automaker in the U.S. this decade, significantly expanding its market share despite a challenging environment marked by geopolitical shifts and a sluggish overall auto sector. Under CEO José Muñoz, the company has emphasized a strong commitment to the U.S. market, boosting local production capacity with a $7.6 billion plant in Georgia. The automaker’s U.S. market share has risen from 8.4% in 2020 to nearly 12% in 2026, surpassing most competitors except Tesla, solidifying Hyundai as the fourth best-selling brand in the country.

A cornerstone of Hyundai’s strategy is ramping up production at the Georgia Metaplant, which currently assembles electric and hybrid vehicles such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 9, and Kia Sportage Hybrid. The company plans to scale the plant’s capacity from 500,000 to potentially 800,000 units by 2028, aligning with a broader $26 billion U.S. investment plan through the decade. This includes a goal to produce 80% of vehicles sold in the U.S. domestically by 2030, doubling the current local production rate and reducing reliance on imports amid tariffs and trade uncertainties.

Hyundai’s growth is supported by a diverse product portfolio that spans affordable models starting in the $20,000 range from Hyundai and Kia to high-end luxury vehicles under the Genesis brand, which can exceed $100,000. The company is focused on innovation and customer satisfaction, frequently introducing new features and electric models to expand their offerings. The Genesis brand, in particular, is gaining momentum as the fastest luxury brand to reach one million global sales, highlighted by the introduction of the flagship GV90 SUV with advanced amenities.

Looking forward, Hyundai aims to capitalize on emerging vehicle segments such as pickup trucks and larger SUVs, where Kia and Hyundai plan to introduce new “body-on-frame” models tailored for the American market. The company’s transformation from a low-cost carmaker into a quality value and luxury player has been marked by quality improvements and strategic investments. These efforts underpin Hyundai’s ambitious “Bold 2030 Vision,” targeting 5.55 million global vehicle sales by 2030, fueled by expansion in the U.S. as a central market for future growth.
