AI’s memory crunch is coming for Android apps

Google is introducing new memory usage requirements for Android apps in response to an industry-wide shortage of memory chips, largely driven by the booming demand for AI data centers. The company announced these measures in August 2026 to help ensure that apps run efficiently across devices, especially those with limited memory capacity. This move addresses hardware supply constraints that have been affecting device memory availability and, consequently, user experience.

To enforce these new standards, Google is establishing stricter performance limits related to dynamic memory consumption and bitmap usage within apps. Developers are now expected to optimize their code to prevent issues like app slowdowns and crashes caused by excessive memory use. To support this transition, Google is providing diagnostic tools that alert developers when their apps exceed memory thresholds, with more advanced tools, including a Memory Limiter feature to restrict excessive memory usage, scheduled for release later in the year.

These changes are particularly significant for lower-cost Android devices, which often come with less memory due to price considerations. Google aims to maintain a high-quality app experience on these devices despite the tightening supply of hardware. Developers have been given a deadline until February 2027 to comply with the updated memory usage requirements, outlined in detail on the Android Developer site.

In addition to memory-related updates, Google will mandate that all apps on the Play Store implement the Zero Tap Sign-In feature by April 2027. This feature automatically restores user sign-ins during device migrations using the Android Restore Credentials API. This change is part of Google's broader effort to improve usability and streamline the user experience as users upgrade or switch devices.
