ESPN Replaces Lead ‘College GameDay’ Producer in Shakeup

ESPN is making a significant leadership change ahead of the 2026 college football season by replacing Jim Gaiero, the longtime executive producer of the flagship show College GameDay, with Matthew Garrett. Gaiero, who helmed the program for the past decade through several major cast changes, will transition into a broader live events production role within ESPN. Garrett, a 21-year veteran of the network and vice president of production, has been involved with College GameDay since 2023 and brings experience from coordinating NFL Countdown shows to his new role.

This move comes as ESPN prepares for an intense upcoming year, including its first-ever Super Bowl telecast at Super Bowl LXI in February 2027, where Gaiero will be heavily involved in producing pregame and related content. Gaiero is also expected to take on a larger role covering major golf events like the Masters and PGA Championship, potentially assuming full golf production duties by 2028. This marks the second recent shakeup in College GameDay’s production, following the departure of former producer Lee Fitting in 2023.

The change has sparked speculation about internal dynamics, particularly involving Pat McAfee, whose arrival in 2022 and that of Nick Saban in 2024 have revamped the show’s appeal and ratings. McAfee, known for his outspoken personality and field presence, has been integral to the show’s 22% viewership increase last season and its growth among younger and female viewers. Despite reported tensions with colleagues and executives, McAfee enjoys strong support from ESPN leadership and is positioned as one of the show’s biggest stars with a looming $60 million annual contract extension.

College GameDay’s 2026 season brings a fresh roster with McAfee, Saban, Kirk Herbstreit in his 30th season, and others, kicking off in Baton Rouge for the show’s 500th road broadcast. The program continues to earn accolades, including its third straight Sports Emmy for outstanding weekly sports studio program. ESPN did not comment on the leadership change, but Garrett’s promotion signals confidence in maintaining the program’s momentum and further expanding its reach.
