Friend-focused photo-sharing app Retro snags $21M

Retro, a photo-sharing app focused on connecting friends, has secured over $21 million in Series A funding, according to a recent SEC filing. Founded by former Instagram engineers Nathan Sharp and Ryan Olson, the app aims to foster more genuine social connections by prioritizing friend-to-friend sharing rather than algorithm-driven content feeds dominated by creators and AI-generated material. This fresh capital round closed in December 2025 and reflects growing investor belief in social platforms that emphasize close personal connections.

Launched in 2023 under the startup Lone Palm Labs, Retro began as a personal photo journaling platform and has since expanded its features. Users can privately share weekly photo updates, create collective albums with friends, access weekly recaps, and utilize a "rewind" feature that allows them to revisit older photos from their digital archives. These options promote a more intimate, curated social experience compared to the broad and often impersonal feeds common in mainstream social apps.

One standout aspect of Retro is its ad-free business model. Rather than relying on advertising revenue, Retro offers in-app subscriptions that unlock premium features such as video and GIF support, sticker comments, additional styles, unlimited photo history, and exclusive app icon customizations. This monetization strategy appears effective, with around 7 million downloads and a reported 460% increase in in-app spending over the last six months, indicating a growing base of committed users.

Retro’s investors include notable names such as Thrive Capital, Figma CEO Dylan Field, Scribble Ventures, and Box Group, among others. PitchBook estimates the startup’s valuation now exceeds $100 million. The app's development and funding highlight a consumer appetite for social platforms that offer privacy, meaningful connections, and user-centric design, standing in contrast to the prevailing trend of algorithm-curated feeds and influencer-driven content.
