Beginning in 2028, the PGA Tour plans to introduce a revamped, two-week Tour Championship that will rotate among different courses, some of which the Tour has rarely or never visited. Although East Lake’s fixed tenure is ending, the venue remains a candidate for future Tour Championships as the PGA Tour continues discussions with the club’s leadership.

The proposed two-week format will conclude with match play and is expected to span venues on both the West and East Coasts. This new scheduling aligns with a broader shift to a two-track model starting in 2028, aiming to enhance the Tour’s structure and fan engagement. Despite the upcoming changes, East Lake’s leadership declined an invitation this year to host a springtime Championship Series event, which is part of the PGA Tour’s new top-tier competition tier, reflecting some uncertainty about the club’s role going forward.

East Lake's historical significance is notable, having hosted the Tour Championship intermittently before taking on permanent duties in 2004 and being synonymous with the birth of the FedExCup in 2007. The venue has built a legacy as the site where PGA Tour champions are crowned each season, making it a symbol of high-level professional golf. This week's tournament at East Lake features a 30-player field competing for a $40 million purse and a $10 million winner’s prize, underscoring the event's prestige and fanfare despite the venue’s uncertain future.

Fans continue to turn out in large numbers, enjoying the various on-site experiences, including grandstands, sponsored activities, and even a signature cocktail called the Fuzzy Peach. Tournament director Alex Urban highlighted East Lake’s place in golf history as a stage for legacy-defining moments and suggested that while the course’s permanent hosting days might be concluding, its importance to the sport and potential to host future Tour Championships remains significant.
