Athletes Unlimited, the innovative sports league known for its unique player-centric model, recently decided to pause its basketball and volleyball seasons to focus more heavily on softball. The decision came shortly after the Utah Talons secured their second consecutive Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) championship on July 26, 2026, highlighting the growing success and popularity of the softball league. Despite the pause, CEO and cofounder Jon Patricof emphasized that the decision to shelve basketball and volleyball was not due to underperformance but was a strategic move to allocate resources where the biggest opportunities lie, mainly softball.
Patricof clarified that Major League Baseball (MLB), which invested eight figures into Athletes Unlimited last year, did not influence the decision to drop basketball and volleyball. While the company is going “heavy investment mode” on softball, the possibility of bringing basketball and volleyball back remains open. Patricof indicated that if those sports return, they may look quite different from past iterations, potentially shaped by the success and insights gained from the softball league’s growth and popularity.
The AUSL has undergone significant growth over its brief history, with the second season drawing record viewership numbers, including 732,000 viewers on ABC for its championship Game 1, setting a pro softball TV record. The league has shifted from a touring model to establishing teams in six home markets, with Portland being a standout for sellout attendance, which helped attract investment from sports technology firm Rule42 Sports. The commercial engine behind Athletes Unlimited’s softball operations is growing substantially compared to two years ago, reflecting the company’s confidence in the sport’s potential.
Looking ahead, Patricof highlighted the 2028 Olympics as a critical milestone driving investment and strategic planning. AUSL’s 2027 season is seen as a lead-up to the Olympics, creating a timely opportunity to capitalize on increased interest and exposure. The company is focused on maximizing growth around this wave, ensuring they leverage the global spotlight to advance professional softball and position the league for long-term sustainability and success.
