Caterpillar has leveraged its extensive experience automating mining operations to advance its deployment of artificial intelligence across its business. The company, known for its autonomous haul trucks and remote-controlled construction equipment, is now applying AI technologies more broadly at jobsites, quarries, and construction settings. CTO Jaime Mineart highlighted that Caterpillar is entering an exciting phase where lessons learned from mining automation are influencing more dynamic and varied environments.

A key AI innovation from Caterpillar is the Cat AI Assistant, a tool enabling field technicians to access repair information, troubleshoot issues, and identify necessary parts using voice commands. This assistant taps into Caterpillar’s proprietary data, supported by a network of about 1.6 million connected assets worldwide generating over 16 petabytes of structured data. The company is also employing AI for digital twin creation in manufacturing and enhancing enterprise functions such as software development and defect detection.

Mineart emphasized that deploying AI requires more than technology creation; it demands changes in workflows and workforce adaptation. Caterpillar relies on experienced operators’ knowledge to train AI systems and foresees a transition where operators manage multiple autonomous machines remotely rather than controlling a single vehicle. This shift presents a training challenge for Caterpillar’s 118,000 employees, prompting a commitment of $100 million over five years to upskill its workforce in AI, autonomy, and robotics.

Caterpillar’s AI initiatives have contributed to exceptional financial performance, with a record quarterly revenue of $20.5 billion in Q2 2026. Particularly strong was the power-generation division, which saw a 72% sales increase to $3.10 billion, fueled by high demand for equipment supporting cloud computing and generative AI infrastructure. CEO Joe Creed noted that demand for AI infrastructure remains robust, positioning Caterpillar to capitalize on the ongoing AI development boom.
