Jay Huff enters his sixth NBA season with the Indiana Pacers, marking a rare period of stability in a previously turbulent career. After going undrafted in 2021, Huff bounced around multiple teams and two-way contracts, including stints with the Lakers, Wizards, Nuggets, and Grizzlies. It wasn’t until early in the 2024-25 season with Memphis that he secured a multi-year standard contract, a milestone after four years and four different teams. His trade to the Pacers in the 2025 offseason brought new challenges but also the first offseason where he didn’t need to worry about his contract.

This summer, Huff stayed mostly in Indianapolis, focusing on strengthening his game and chemistry, especially with star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who had missed the entire previous season. Huff’s time practicing and scrimmaging with Haliburton and other teammates was critical as the pair looks to build a strong on-court relationship. His optimism about not having to relocate reflects the advantages of continuity, something Huff had never experienced before in his NBA career.

Huff’s role with the Pacers is expected to be as the backup center behind Ivica Zubac. Last season, he played all 82 games, averaging 9.5 points and 4.0 rebounds, but his per-minute production declined in some areas, including his three-point shooting percentage dropping to 31.9% from above 40% the prior year. Despite the dip, Huff’s shot-blocking remained elite, ranking just behind Victor Wembanyama, and he improved as a passer, fitting well with Indiana’s playing style. His ability to contribute defensively and in transition is vital to his role on the team.

Physically, Huff has bulked up by 10 to 15 pounds this offseason to better handle the demands of the NBA while maintaining agility. This added strength combined with better familiarity of the Pacers’ system and teammates sets him up for a potentially more productive second season in Indiana. The Pacers, coming off a disappointing 19-win campaign, will be counting on Huff to bring more impact as a rotation player to help the team improve in 2026-27.
