After being released by the Texas Rangers earlier this month, Kelenic has now signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees and will report to their Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. His move to New York represents a fresh opportunity to rehabilitate his major league career after fluctuating success since being traded to Atlanta from the Seattle Mariners in late 2023.

Kelenic’s initial role with the Braves included expectations as a starting left fielder, but a disappointing spring and eventual platoon utilization shifted his trajectory. Injuries to other Atlanta outfielders gave him increased playing time in 2024, including stints in center field and at the leadoff spot, but his offensive struggles prevented him from establishing a long-term presence. In 2025, he mostly played in Triple-A, seeing minimal time in the majors before his release and subsequent signing with the Yankees.

The Yankees present a challenging environment for Kelenic to break into the major league roster, given the crowded outfield with players like Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, and the soon-to-return Aaron Judge, who may spend some time as DH as he recovers from injury. Although an immediate call-up appears unlikely, roster expansions in September or unforeseen injuries could open a path for Kelenic to contribute. Should he earn playing time with New York, Braves fans will get a rare chance to witness him compete against his former team.
