CBS Not Airing UFC 329 Prelims Despite Conor McGregor’s Return

CBS has chosen not to simulcast the preliminary bouts for UFC 329, despite the major draw of Conor McGregor’s return fight scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026. While the network will air a one-hour primetime special on Friday night featuring weigh-ins, interviews, and commentary from UFC president Dana White, the actual fights will be exclusively available on the Paramount+ streaming service. This represents a shift from CBS's recent approach, as the network simulcasted portions of UFC 326 and 327 earlier this year.

This decision marks a strategic pivot for Paramount, the UFC's broadcast partner, which is focusing on driving subscriptions to its streaming platform rather than leveraging CBS’s broader reach for live airing of high-profile fights. The choice comes after Paramount also decided against airing the UFC Freedom 250 event on CBS, despite early indications and statements from UFC and TKO leadership suggesting that such major events would enjoy exposure on broadcast television. The Freedom 250 had attracted significant curiosity, and airing it on CBS might have converted casual viewers into Paramount+ subscribers.

From a business perspective, Paramount’s approach seems designed to protect the value of its streaming product by restricting free samples on broadcast TV, even as this limits the reach for marquee events. Conor McGregor, who is returning to the octagon after five years, has enormous drawing power. The high ticket price for UFC 329 at the T-Mobile Arena, averaging $1,000, underscores the event’s premium status, which would seem ideal for maximizing exposure through CBS to boost streaming subscriptions.

However, CBS is opting to fill its UFC 329 time slot on Saturday night with regular programming like NCIS: Sydney and 48 Hours. The move highlights Paramount’s commitment to integrating UFC content closely with its digital service, reinforcing its $1.1 billion, seven-year deal with UFC. While this strategy prioritizes driving streaming revenue, it raises questions about missed opportunities to engage the broader casual sports audience that broadcast TV typically captures.
